HOHNER CORSO MELODEON IN D/G. BUTTON ACCORDION.
December 5th, 2008
Here is an Hohner Corso melodeon, made in Germany, in the same condition as i bought it. Dates from 1950’s/60’s. It is three voice musette tuned. Originally, it was in B/C, but has been converted to D/G. The tuning is very good, no broken reeds, all valves good. Yes, the condition is poor, as you can see in the many photos, but it plays like a dream. Excellent compression on the bellows, (should be with all that tape!), and a light, fast action.
If you don’t care what it looks like, but want a great sounding, easy playing melodeon this is for you. It still has years of life in it.
Dimensions = 12 1/2″ x 8″ x 13″.
Weight = 4kg.
GIUSTOZZI ORGANETTO – MELODEON – BUTTON ACCORDION. HANDMADE ITALIAN
December 5th, 2008
Here is a melodeon made by Giustozzi, Castelfidardo, Italy. It is in the key of A. It is in fantastic condition, with its original case. It is a three voice instrument, which is dry tuned (LMM). It has one stop to remove the low voice. It has 12 keys in total, the three on the second row are repeat notes in reverse, ie, on the pull instead of the push, and vice versa. Very handy for complicated runs. Also all three together on the pull give the arpeggio chord of A, handy to finish a tune with a full chord, when you’ve run out of air on the push!
It has two built in microphones, which work well (connecting cable included). The tuning is spot on, i know, i tuned it! I am the UK’s only maker of cajun accordions, and also offer tuning services to my customers. Note, the very first low note, (the one you don’t use!), does not have the low voice, it was made that way.
I could go on, i have been to the workshop in Castelfidardo twice, and all the accordions they make are excellent. If this is for you, you will not be disappointed.
Overall, a fantastic playing melodeon, fast action, with a fat, loud sound for its small size.
Weight = 2.35kg.
Dimensions = 9 1/2 ” x 5 1/2″ x 11 1/4″.
TURKISH SAZ with CASE.
December 4th, 2008Here is a turkish Saz, complete with a soft padded (quilted) case which fits very well. It has tie on frets and the sound hole is in the bottom, which is usual for a saz. The condition is very good, no cracks, no separations, some very minor scuffs/blemishes in the varnish. It plays very well with the classic sound you just can’t reproduce on any other instrument. The tie on frets also give it the unique sound, as they are not in “western” intervals. The usual tuning is GG, DD, AA.
Length =32 1/2″. (83cm). Weight = 562g.
HOHNER HARMONICA BELT. HB6. HOLDS 6 HARPS.

1950’s ZENITH ARCHTOP GUITAR.
November 21st, 2008This is a Zenith 1950’s archtop imported by Boosey & Hawkes. I believe they were made in Germany. The label states, “The new zenith de luxe model. This instrument, Serial No. BIJOU 2068 has been tested and approved by Ivor Mairants (signature). Sole distributors Boosey & Hawkes LTD London”. It has new tuners, an added Artec neck pickup & a new bone saddle. Otherwise it is all original. No cracks or separations, good straight, 3 part neck. Neck, back and front are all bound. It is made of all solid wood. This is the 5th one of these I’ve had, & they have all had the same Serial No!

HOHNER AMATONA IV MELODEON ACCORDION. B/C. EXCELLENT.
November 9th, 2008
Here is an Hohner Amatona IV melodeon in B/C tuning. It is made in Switzerland, which are far superior to the German made ones. It is a 4 voice instrument with musette tuning and a low reed. The condition can be seen in the many photos.
All the original reeds are present in very good condition, as are the valves. There are no broken or replacement reeds. Each reed has the T stamp, which are the best Hohner reeds you can get in my opinion. The tuning is very good, for every single note. Rare to find!
The compression is very good, some superficial wear to the bellows, very slight, but has to be mentioned. The insides are very clean. The shoulder straps are worn, and while still functioning, ideally need replacing. All other straps are original and good. There is a single small hole in the back of the keyboard, where a thumbstrap was fixed.
It comes with a padded “gig bag” style case, which has a shoulder strap.
In all, an excellent sounding melodeon, with a fast action.
ANTIQUE LYON & HEALY PARLOUR GUITAR. WASHBURN 1900’S.
November 9th, 2008Here is a Lyon & Healy parlour or parlor guitar made around late 1800’s, 1900? If you can help with dating it, please let me know. I have just been informed it may be early 1926. See questions below.
Q:
Hi from Paris, The serial number places your guitar in early 1926. Although it is possible that the back is solid, sides are for sure laminated like all L&H of this period. This was made to strengthen the body, and at the time it was not a way to cut costs… It is not braced for modern steel strings so I would recommand Thomastik rope core or spectrum extra light. They will save the top and provide the perfect vintage sound of these instruments. I personally own a L&H of the same year with a bigger body but not in such a good shape and a 1912 Washburn. Good luck Jeff
A:
Hi Jeff, many thanks for your input. I thought the ink stamp is a model or style number. Also the ‘upside down’ tuner cogs date it earlier. I think they probably are original. Although they work fine, why keep them if they aren’t? Of course i may be totally wrong, you obviously have more experience of these than me. My knowledge of L&H guitars is limited, after all, they don’t turn up everyday! I’ll leave string choice to the new owner.
Originally it had a tailpiece & floating bridge, now it has a fixed bridge of the appropriate style. You can see the filled screwholes in the bottom where the tailpiece used to be.
The brand in the back strip states “MADE BY LYON & HEALY CHICAGO ILL. USA”. There is an ink stamp inside on the top block, 274-7. It has a bone nut & saddle, 5 bone bridge pins, the other being plastic. The neck is perfectly straight with no fret or fingerboard wear. It has the classic V profile.
The bracing for the top is very minimal, one above the soundhole, one slightly diagonal below the soundhole, and a bridge brace that runs the whole width across. This gives it a large free area for producing that all important element, TONE.
It is very light and resonant.
Solid mahogany back and sides, solid spruce top, ebony finger board and bridge.
In all, a fantastic playing guitar, which has been restored with no expense spared.
Dimensions,
Length = 37″ (940mm).
Width at lower bout = 12 3/4″ (324mm).
Upper bout = 9 1/4″ (235mm).
Body depth at bottom = 4 1/8″ (105mm).
Body depth at heel = 3 1/4″ (83mm).
Width at nut = 1 3/4″ (45mm).
Scale length = 20 1/4″ (515mm).
Weight = 1.4kg.
